Dr laura lamarche

Assessing and treating running injuries has been my specialty for over 14 years. I started the University of Utah Runner’s Clinic in 2010 after graduating with my doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Utah. Since that time, I have treated thousands of runners and athletes from recreational to professional. This has included NCAA Div I track / cross country athletes, NBA players, road/trail/sky runners, short sprinters and ultra-marathoners. I am SO excited to bring this experience to The Gait Lab!

  • -Utah board certified physical therapist since 2010

-Certified dry needling specialist since 2016

Assessing and treating running injuries has been my specialty since 2010. My specialty is unique in the physical therapy world, as few clinicians have access and understanding of how to integrate research grade motion capture and force data into their assessment of running and musculoskeletal injuries.

My resume to date has included founder and lead physical therapist of the University Runner’s Clinic, numerous posters at conferences, published research in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and professional publication in The Wall Street Journal, KSL, as well as guest speaker on podcasts such as ‘Who cares about Men’s Health’. I have taken over 20 continuing education physical therapy courses on running injuries.

  • I began integrating technology with my assessment of runners using a pressure plate, motion capture system in 2012. The data collected quickly became overwhelming. Learning the research on biomechanical data, and how to integrate the data clinically, is an area I continue to spend a large amount of time researching.

I started using the same system The Gait Lab utilizes in 2017. This research grade, marker-less, force plate treadmill motion capture system is truly one of the most state-of-the-art systems in the world. One of the most stand out feature of this system is that the processing time of the capture is only a few minutes! Many systems of this caliber take many hours to process. This means I can get to work on interpreting the capture right away.

Developing return to run programs has always an integral component of working with running injuries. I began to get more official coaching education when I recognized I needed more formal training in this area. Training errors are a large component of sustaining overuse injuries, but they can also lead to inadequate training, unguided race expectations and overtraining/underperforming to name a few other issues runners struggle with.

I have learned coaching principles from numerous sources (USATF, Altis, RRCA to name a few) with enormous reservoirs of experience. Bringing this experience based – training load approach to my runners has given me the ability to include a critical piece of The Gait Lab. Adding training plans and coaching strategies allows a very integral pillar to my approach.

Coaching plans will be delivered in Training Peaks, which syncs to most wearable or tracking devices for shared access. It is a great platform for not only delivering your specific training plan, but also communicate via messages, and modify your plan at any time for any reason.
